Early Childhood Traumas

Childhood Traumas

Not everything is what it looks like. And not everything can be explained unambiguously. Sometimes you have to dig deeper to get to the real nature. A painful knee can just happen in the lower back. However, this is not the first place a physiotherapist will begin his treatment. The focus will be on the knee itself first. If the treatment is not successful, further investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the pain. In this way, the complaints can be treated effectively and it is not just about treating the symptoms.

Symptoms

Of course, this does not only apply to physical complaints. These complaints can arise for many different reasons. By stumbling while climbing stairs, but also because your mental state is not well balanced. In fact, if you google for physical stress symptoms, a decent list comes up, such as headaches, stomach problems, excessive sweating and fatigue. These complaints often go away on their own when the tensions decrease. But sometimes the complaints persist without there being an unambiguous explanation for where these complaints come from. We encounter this situation very regularly at Merk Hoe Sterk. And it often turns out that the cause lies in early childhood for a large part (about 60 per cent) of our students. How about that exactly?

The consequences

Many of our students have had a long career with general practitioners, doctors and other medical specialists. His hospitals often end with vague physical complaints, severe fatigue, high muscle tension and gastrointestinal complaints. The entire medical mill is run through, but the often lengthy and intensive physical examinations yield little or nothing. In fact, the uncertainty can further fuel feelings of powerlessness. These people are going to retreat into their cocoon. Trying to become invisible with a high chance of loneliness. Relationships and friendships are becoming increasingly difficult and the complaints are increasing. The moment they are really asked, many of them suffer from a form of depression, feel deep fears that can express themselves in, for example, tantrums. They feel misunderstood and become isolated. A depression or burnout is then lurking. People struggle with life and look for a way out, resulting in all possible disastrous ways out.

Impressions on young children

The question then is where these complaints could come from. One of the causes can be early childhood trauma. During pregnancy, birth and early childhood, we are completely dependent on others. This dependence makes us extra receptive to overwhelming events. We are open to all impressions and we do not yet have the ability to understand and explain events as a child. There is therefore no difference between good and bad. Traumatic events are stored in the subconscious mind. People often cannot or hardly remember it, but the intense experiences do lie dormant. At a later age, for example, they can express themselves through intense fears or by (un)consciously reliving the events that gave rise to the trauma. This can also lead to avoidance behavior for places and situations that provoke such a re-experience. And yet, strange as it may be, these people often end up in these situations. A sense of guilt also plays a major role in early childhood trauma. The events are trivialized and confirmation is sought in daily life. This creates the feeling of not being there; be redundant and useless. They feel ashamed and misunderstood. This creates the feeling of not being there; be redundant and useless. They feel ashamed and misunderstood. This creates the feeling of not being there; be redundant and useless. They feel ashamed and misunderstood.

The right help

Professional help is vital. Good listening and understanding is the basis. An important task for a coach is to have patience, to give people the feeling that they are heard and understood. An analysis must then be made and from there it must be determined which tools are needed or which practitioner best suits the person and the problem.
